UFC 83 Head-To-Head PicksApril 16th, 2008
The traditional CBS Sportsline Head-to-Head picks for UFC 83 are now available, and look who’s still barely clinging to first place.
I wasn’t sure I’d be able to hold that spot after my terrible showing on the last UFC Fight Night, but apparently my peers were also caught off-guard by a few of those fights.
This time around our picks are all pretty similar to one another, which is in line with the betting odds for this event. It’s a strong card from top to bottom, but more than a few of these guys seem to have been thrown on there for local appeal (read: Canadians).
Regardless, look forward to exciting night of fights on Saturday.

I’m wondering if you could elaborate on why you think Herman’s JJ is as good as Maia’s?
Here’s a video that illustrates why I’m asking

Even if you still think Herman is at that level, it’s a fun video. Personally I think Maia’s JJ is multiple classes above Herman’s mat technique. Herman’s biggest asset here will be his size and conditioning.
I’ve actually seen that video, and it is pretty entertaining.
In response to your question, first let me point out that I didn’t say Herman’s jiu-jitsu was as good as Maia’s. I said it was “good enough to hang with Maia on the mat.” As in, in an MMA fight, not a jiu-jitsu match. There’s a difference.
Second, performance in grappling tournaments — especially with the gi — doesn’t necessarily mean much in MMA. If it did, Pe de Pano would be an unassailable bad-ass, and he isn’t.
Third, in the MMA portion of that video, who did you see Maia beating? Anyone really noteworthy? What I’m saying is we don’t know for sure what he can do in MMA just yet. Herman has been in some battles, and while he’s still a little rough around the edges, I like his chances.
Plus, you gotta go out on a limb sometimes, Vrax, otherwise it gets boring.
Care to place small wager? ^_o
But ok, thanks for clarifying that you meant only good enough to hang, like you um said, as opposed to what I decided you had said.
I admit that I tend to overrate great JJ grapplers in MMA, good to be reminded of that fact sometimes.
Oh and Ben, since I mostly just jab and debate at you, let me say that I really enjoy your writing and think that you’re doing great work. No buts about it, I AM a fan.
Cough cough
Point taken. You should see a doctor about that cough. Thing like that could kill a man.
I kid because I love.
